Jeanette Popp, a victim's mother, made a very personal plea Saturday to the candidates competing for the district attorney's office in Travis County. A group of activists, which included the mother of a murder victim, urged them to do their part to put an end to the death penalty.

Four candidates are vying for Travis DA.

They'll oversee justice in Travis County, and for some, justice means a moratorium on the death penalty.

Protesters converged outside the courthouse Saturday afternoon carrying signs that read "stop executions now" and others calling for a moratorium on executions.

It was a public plea to elicit a pledge from the next district attorney to promise not to seek the death penalty in capital cases for their first term in office.

Instead, they want more prisoners sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. A plan supported by Jeanette Popp, whose daughter was murdered in Austin 20 years ago. Two men were wrongfully convicted of that crime, until cops caught the real killer.

Running for DA are Gary Cobb, Rosemary Lehmberg, Mindy Montford, and Rick Reed. All four are Democrats, and all four currently work in the DA's office under Ronnie Earle, the retiring incumbent. That means this election will all but be decided in the Texas Democratic primary Mar. 4.
